Why does Windows need an extension?
HEIC uses the HEVC codec for compression. Microsoft must pay royalties for this codec, which is why it's not included by default.
Will the free extension work?
The free "HEIF Image Extensions" works for some HEIC files but not all. Full support requires the paid HEVC extension.
Is converting better than installing?
If you only occasionally receive HEIC files, conversion is simpler. If you work with them daily, installing extensions may be worthwhile.
